Hyperliquid (HYPE): What Trump's Mention and the $329M Unlock Mean

Trump named Hyperliquid at the White House, a $329M team unlock went to one buyer, and three ETFs hold HYPE. What holders should know about the risks.

Video: Hyperliquid (HYPE): What Trump's Mention and the $329M Unlock Mean

Key takeaways

  • Trump said the CFTC chairman is working to bring Hyperliquid into the US. That is work in progress, with no date given.
  • The October 2026 team unlock of about 3.75 million HYPE reportedly went to one unnamed institutional buyer in a private deal, not onto the open market.
  • Hyperliquid uses about 99% of its fee revenue to buy back HYPE, according to Grayscale. That flywheel can also run in reverse when trading volume falls.
  • Inflows into the US HYPE ETFs were small, about $3.3 million in one week, compared with the size of the team unlock.
  • Look up the unlock schedule for every coin you hold and write down the next release date and size before the headline arrives.

In August 2026, the president of the United States said the name of one crypto exchange at the White House: Hyperliquid. According to the video, citing CoinDesk, that sentence sent its token, HYPE, up about 11% that day. Weeks later, roughly $329 million of team tokens unlocked, and the price rose instead of falling.

For anyone holding HYPE, the two headlines raise practical questions. What did the president promise? Where did the unlocked coins go? And what risks get left out when a coin is having a good run? This Bullrunners video works through each one.

What is Hyperliquid and why did Trump’s mention matter?

Hyperliquid is a crypto exchange where people trade perpetual futures, or “perps.” A perp is a bet on where a coin’s price goes next, often made with borrowed money. HYPE is the token behind the platform.

Hyperliquid is offshore, so Americans can’t use it. The video compares it to a popular restaurant that half the country isn’t allowed into, where the president then says they’re working on letting people in. That is why the comment moved the price.

On August 19, 2026, Trump said the head of the CFTC, the US regulator for this kind of trading, “is also working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion.” A Bloomberg Intelligence analyst said on August 25 that this would make Hyperliquid the first DeFi (decentralized finance) platform regulated onshore by the CFTC.

The video points out the limits of what was said. The work is underway, but nothing is done and no date was given. As the host puts it, a door being opened isn’t the same as a door being open.

Did the Hyperliquid team dump its unlocked tokens?

Not on the open market, according to reports cited in the video. Hyperliquid’s token schedule shows a team release around the 6th of every month, about 9.9 million HYPE on paper.

Around October 6 and 7, 2026, Hyperliquid Labs began unstaking 3.75 million HYPE, worth roughly $329 million. Team unlocks often lead to selling and a falling price. This time, reports said those 3.75 million tokens were going to one institutional buyer in a private deal away from the exchange. HYPE rose about 4 to 5% on the news, per CoinMarketCap.

The open question is who the buyer was. As of October 6, 2026, nobody had said.

How does Hyperliquid make money?

Hyperliquid earns fees every time someone trades, and almost all of that money goes back into buying HYPE. Grayscale’s head of research, Zach Pandl, said at the Hyperliquid Summit 2026 that the exchange was running at an annualized revenue rate of about $350 million, and that 99% of fee revenue is used to buy back the token. He also called it the third-largest crypto perps exchange in the world, behind Binance and Bybit. The video notes that Grayscale sells a HYPE fund, so Pandl is not a neutral source.

The video describes a second source of buybacks. In early October 2026, Hyperliquid reportedly received its first income payment from the dollars it holds in reserve, about $14.5 million, set aside for more HYPE buybacks.

Pandl also noted that Hyperliquid had zero venture capital funding and airdropped around 30% of the token to users. That means no VC firms are holding cheap early tokens and waiting to sell. The video links this to a loyal community that watches unlock news closely.

Which ETFs hold HYPE?

Three US funds launched in 2026, according to the video:

Fund Issuer Exchange Launch date Notes
THYP 21Shares Nasdaq May 12, 2026
BHYP Bitwise NYSE May 15, 2026 Includes staking
HYPG Grayscale Nasdaq June 3, 2026 Lowest fee of the three, 0.29% a year

These funds let people get HYPE exposure through an ordinary brokerage account. The trade-off is that you don’t hold the coins yourself, and you pay a yearly fee.

Bitwise’s chief investment officer, Matt Hougan, said in May 2026 that the world’s understanding of Hyperliquid is “maybe 5% done.” In the same answer he said it is not straight up from here and pointed to regulatory and other risks. Bitwise also sells one of these funds.

The video’s point here is that fund flows are small. In the week from September 28 to October 2, 2026, all the US HYPE funds together took in about $3.3 million, according to Token Post. That is tiny next to the $329 million that changed hands in the single unlock deal. In the video’s words, the funds are a door, not the engine.

What would change if Hyperliquid came to the US?

A US version would likely mean more rules and much lower leverage. In June 2026, the CFTC chairman said pushing this activity offshore just leads Americans to use VPNs to access it anyway, without any protections. He said offshore leverage can reach 250x or more, while in the US it has been more in the 5x to 7x range, sometimes up to 10x.

On October 6, 2026, he told CNBC that the CFTC can’t require every exchange to register, as the Clarity Act would have done, but that it can create a “federal option.” With Congress not passing that broader crypto law, the regulator is offering a deal: register, follow the rules, and get access to American customers.

On timing, Pandl said Grayscale is optimistic that US traders and institutions will have full access to the Hyperliquid platform “in the coming couple of years.” To sum up the three views:

  1. The president: they are working on it.
  2. The regulator: far lower leverage onshore than offshore.
  3. A fund manager with a HYPE product: a couple of years.

What are the risks for HYPE holders?

The video lists several risks that tend to get skipped in bullish coverage:

  • The buyback flywheel can reverse. Coin Bureau said in June 2026 that the mechanism everyone is bullish on is the first thing to break when the cycle turns: less volume, fewer buybacks, a falling price, less interest and even less volume.
  • Third-party markets can fail. On May 28, 2026, a SpaceX market on Hyperliquid set up by an outside team crashed about 45% in around 30 minutes after a bad price feed. About $1.5 million of positions were wiped out, according to CoinDesk and CoinMarketCap.
  • A small group runs the network. According to Coin Bureau, Hyperliquid runs on roughly 27 to 30 validators, the computers that confirm trades, and its core software isn’t open source.
  • Leverage cuts both ways. In the October 10, 2025 crypto crash, around $19 billion of leveraged bets were wiped out across crypto, and Hyperliquid took the biggest share, per CoinDesk.
  • One good unlock is not a rule. A single private buyer absorbing the tokens once doesn’t mean future unlocks will go the same way.

Hyperliquid founder Jeff Yan said at Token2049 in Singapore in October 2025 that users go where trust is earned, and that trust is “hard to earn and very easy to lose.”

A two-minute unlock check for any coin you hold

The video suggests a free exercise that takes a couple of minutes per coin:

  1. Open the app where your coins are held and pick your largest position.
  2. Search the coin’s name plus “unlock schedule” on a site such as Tokenomist.
  3. Write down the date of the next large release and how many tokens are due.
  4. Ask yourself: if that headline lands, will I panic, or have I already decided what to do?
  5. Repeat for every coin you hold, not only HYPE.

The idea is to decide your limits, dates and exits before the headlines arrive, so a deadline doesn’t make the decision for you.

What to watch next

The video names three things to track. First, the next large release on HYPE’s token schedule, around November 6, 2026. Second, whether the buyer of the $329 million in team tokens is ever named. Third, the CFTC’s final rules on bringing perps trading to the US. Until those rules exist, US access to Hyperliquid is a stated goal, not a done deal.

Frequently asked questions

What did Trump say about Hyperliquid?

At the White House on August 19, 2026, Trump said the head of the CFTC is working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal way. According to the video, HYPE rose about 11% that day, citing CoinDesk.

Did the Hyperliquid team dump its HYPE unlock?

Not on the open market, according to reports cited in the video. Around October 6 and 7, 2026, Hyperliquid Labs began unstaking about 3.75 million HYPE, worth roughly $329 million, and reports said the coins were going to one institutional buyer in a private deal. The buyer had not been named.

Which ETFs hold HYPE?

The video names three US funds: 21Shares' THYP on Nasdaq (launched May 12, 2026), Bitwise's BHYP on the NYSE with staking (May 15, 2026) and Grayscale's HYPG on Nasdaq (June 3, 2026), which has the lowest fee of the three at 0.29% a year.

Can Americans use Hyperliquid?

Not yet. Hyperliquid is offshore, and Americans can't use it. Grayscale's Zach Pandl said he expects full US access in the coming couple of years, and Grayscale sells a HYPE fund.

When is the next Hyperliquid token unlock?

The video says the token schedule shows a team release around the 6th of each month, with the next one around November 6, 2026. On paper each release is about 9.9 million HYPE.

From the video's captions, lightly formatted. Captions can mishear names and numbers, so check figures against the article above.

I understand that Mike is also working to bring hyperlquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion. He's working very hard on that.

That's a president of the United States at the White House on the 19th of August, 2026, saying the name of one crypto exchange, Hyperlquid. Hype holders, you'll remember this. That one sentence sent your coin up about 11% that day, according to CoinDesk. Trump wants hyperlquid in America and by then three Wall Street ETFs were already holding hype. Then in the first week of October 2026 about $329 million of team coins unlocked all lined up for a single buyer according to reports.

Normally that's where a coin falls off a cliff but it didn't. The price went up on the news. So, if you own Hype, the president opened the door to America. But here's the catch. Nobody mentions.

And did the team dump? Well, I'll show you exactly where those coins went. Watch this first before you buy or sell anything. And there's a link in the description, the first one. It's changed how a lot of people deal with coins like this.

And I'll tell you why before we're 5 minutes in. Because let's be honest, it's a tough spot. You've got real money in coins like this. The president says a name and the price shoots up and it feels like watching the train leave. So, we jump on near the top, then a scary unlock headline shakes us out at the bottom.

Same coin, same news. And it's easy to get it wrong both ways. Quick bit of background. Hyperlquid is a crypto exchange where people trade perpetual futures or per short. You're betting on where a coin's price goes next, often with borrowed money and then the coin behind the whole thing is hype.

Here's the problem. Hyperlquid is offshore, so Americans can't use it. Think of a really popular restaurant where half the country isn't allowed through the door and the president says, "We're working on letting them." That's why it moved the price. And here's Bloomberg Intelligence on the 25th of August 2026.

I mean, I cannot imagine or or or describe the importance of this. Hyperlid is the biggest name in the decentralized finance space. Bringing that onshore would be the first DeFi platform that be regulated onshore by the CFTC. The first one regulated in America. That's surprise.

But listen to what Trump said. The head of the CFTC, America's regulator for this kind of trading, is working to bring it in. Working on it, not done and no day. And a door being opened isn't the same as a door being open. Here's the bit hype holders were nervous about.

Hyperlquid's token schedule shows a big release for the team around the 6th of every month. On paper, that's about 9.9 million hype. Around the 6th and 7th of October 2026, Hyperlipquid Labs began unstaking 3.75 million of them worth roughly $329 million according to Kcoin news and finance feeds. Now, normally that's when team coins get sold and the price drops. Well, not this time. reports said that 3.75 million were going to one institutional buyer in a private deal away from the exchange.

So, the coins weren't dumped on the open market and hype rose about four to 5% on the news according to Coin Market Cap. So, did the team dump? Not on the open market, no. But think about what that means. Reports say one buyer agreed to take around $329 million of hype in one go.

And as for the 6th of October 2026, nobody had said who. Like if you're bullish and let's run it. Most of us only heard about Hyperlid once it had already had its big run. I know I did. And that's not because we were dafted.

Nobody hands you a plan with the coin. We get headlines instead and we react to whichever one we saw last. That's not really a strategy. I've done it and I'd guess you have too. It's tiring and it can get expensive.

And here's the part that really stinks. When the president said its name, people who' done their homework weren't panicking. They knew what they held and what would make them sell. Everyone else was just refreshing the chart. Am I telling you to buy hype?

Well, no. There may be better opportunities for your situation, and that's exactly the problem our altcoin pro course is built to fix. It's about having a plan for coins like this before the headline lands, not scrambling after it. So, here's where to start. Click the first link in the description and fill in the form.

Then book your free 15minute call and one of the team will talk through your own strategy and your own situation with you specifically. There's no cost at all. The form comes first and then you book the call on a phone. Well, tap more under this video and it's the first link you'll see. Do it before the next unlock date, not after.

Then come back because next I'll show you the money machine behind hype and that's the part that breaks first. First, how big is it? Well, Zack Pandle, who runs research at Grayscale, said at the Hyperlquid Summit 2026 that it had become the third largest crypto per exchange in the world, behind only Binance and Bybit. Grayscale sells one of the hyper funds, so he's not neutral, but the point stands. So, why do the big funds like it so much?

Well, it's pretty simple. Hyperlquid makes money every time someone trades and almost all of that money goes back into buying Hype. Here's Grayscales Zack Pandle again on stage at the Hyperlid Summit 2026. Year to date, Hyperlid is running at an annualized revenue run rate of about $350 million. And the vast majority of fee revenue, 99% of fee revenue is used to buy back the Hype token. $350 million a year on Grayscale's numbers and 99% of the fees go back into buying the coin.

Think of a business that spends nearly every penny of profit buying back its own shares every single day. That's the engine. And there's a second engine starting up. In early October 2026, Hyperlid received its first payment of income from the dollars it holds in reserve. about $14.5 million set aside for more hype buybacks and that's according to crypto briefing and Phoenix and how it all started matters a lot to holders pandle again

Hyperlid had zero venture capital funding hyperlid air dropped around 30% of the token to users

so no venture capital firm sitting on the cheap coins waiting to sell and around 30% given away to the people using it. That's a big reason the community is so loyal and why people watch the unlock news so closely and that engine is why Wall Street came knocking. 21 shares launched THYP on NASDAQ on the 12th of May 2026. Bitwise launched BHYP on the New York Stock Exchange on the 15th of May with staking and Gayscale launched HYPG on NASDAQ on the 3rd of June with the lowest fee of the three, 0.29% a year. So, what does that mean for you and me?

Well, it means that you can own Hype through an ordinary share dealing account without ever touching a crypto exchange. The catch is that you don't hold the coins yourself and you pay a fee every year. Bitwise's chief investment officer, Matt Hogan, went on Milk Road in May 2026 and made the bull case. Bitwise sells one of those funds, too. So bear that in mind.

Look, I think that the reality is that the world is slowly starting to realize what Hyperlid is. And I would say that that process is maybe 5% done. It's not straight up from here. There are lots of risks. There regulatory risks. there other risks.

5% done in his view and plenty of risks in the same breath. And here's what most videos skip. The money going into these funds is small. In the week from the 28th of September to the 2nd of October 2026, all the American hype funds put together took in about $3.3 million according to Token Post. Compare that with $329 million of team coins changing hands in one deal.

The funds are a door. They're not the engine. So, back to what Trump said. If Hyperliquid does come to America, what changes? The man Trump named is Mike Celic, the chairman of the CFTC.

In June 2026, he went on bank list and explained why he wants these markets brought home and how different the borrowing looks offshore compared to America. if we erect barriers, if we push this activity offshore, it will go offshore and it's not going to benefit the American people because they're going to go use a VPN and access it anyway and they have none of the protections. Leverage is a big issue. So leverage offshore you see 250x sometimes you know beyond that even uh in the United States we've seen more 5 to 7x range sometimes getting up to 10 250 times leverage offshore 5 to 7 times in America sometimes up to 10 that's a completely different game and on the 6th of October 2026 went on CNBC to explain how he's been going about it

we don't have the ability to say every exchange needs to register with us as the Clarity Act would have done. But we can create a federal option and that's exactly what we're doing here today.

So why is he doing it in this way? Well, Congress didn't pass the big crypto law. So the regulator is building what he calls a federal option instead. Sign up, play by the rules, and you get the American customers. That's the deal.

Coming on means safer, slower, and more rules. And remember Gayscale's Zack Pandle? In that same summit talk, he put a timeline on full access.

But we believe we are on that path and that we are optimistic that in the coming couple of years, we will see full access to the hyperlquid ecosystem and platform to US traders, US institutions.

A couple of years and that's from a company that sells a hype fund. So if anyone tells you American money is about to flood in a day, remember who said what. The president said they're working on it. The regulator points to far lower leverage in America and the fund manager says a couple of years. Here's something you can do for free straight after this video and it takes less time than making a cup of tea.

Open whatever app your coins are in and pick the biggest one you hold. Search its name in the words unlock schedule on a site like Tokconomist. Then write down two things. The date of the next big release and how many coins are due. Then ask yourself one question.

If that headline lands, will I panic or will I have already decided what to do? Most people have never looked this up for a single coin they own. And it's how the deadline ends up making the decision for them. Do it for every coin you hold, not just hype. It's a couple of minutes a coin.

And it's a difference between reacting and being ready. Someone's already typing it underneath this video. Hang on. The unlock went fine. The price went up.

So unlocks don't matter for hype maybe. But one private buyer taking the coins once doesn't make it a rule and the buyback engine has a weak spot. Coin Bureau put it bluntly in June 2026. So the exact mechanism that everyone is bullish on is the first thing to break when the cycle turns. Less volume, fewer buybacks, falling price, less interest, even less volume.

That's the flywheel. When trading's busy, the buybacks help push the price up. When trading dries up, the same wheel spins the other way. And there's more to think about. On the 28th of May 2026, a Space X market on Hyperlid set up by an outside team crashed about 45% in around 30 minutes after a bad price feed, wiping out about $1.5 million of positions.

That's according to CoinDesk and Coin Market Cap. According to Coin Bureau in June 2026, the network runs on roughly 27 to 30 validators. The computers that confirm the trades and its core software isn't open source. In plain English, a small group runs the machine. And on the 10th of October 2025, the big crypto crash wiped out around $19 billion of leverage bets across crypto.

And Hyperlid took the biggest share according to CoinDesk and AM Crypto. Borrowed money catches a lot of people out in the end. I once had about 10 grand liquidated on a Bitcoin trade. That's when the exchange closes your position for you because the price went against you. I laughed, shut the laptop, and went for a walk.

But you can only stay calm if you've decided your limits before the move, not during it. Even Hyperlid founder Jeff Yan says the trust is fragile. Here he is at token 2049 in Singapore in October 2025.

If you treat the end users right, then the whole thing works out. Ultimately, the users go where trust is earned and trust is hard to earn and very easy to lose.

Hard to earn and very easy to lose. That's true for an exchange and it's true for our money, too. The people who come out of a run like this in good shape usually aren't the ones who pick the perfect coin. They're the ones who decided their limits, their dates, and their exits before the headlines started shouting. So, here's where it all lands.

The president named it. Three Wall Street funds hold it. The team's unlock went to one buyer, not the open market, and the price went up. And the engine is real. $350 million a year on Gayscale's numbers with nearly all the fees going back into hype. But America isn't open.

Leverage there runs far lower than offshore. The fund flows are small and the flywheel spins both ways. One private buyer, one good day, and one speech doesn't add up to a guarantee. They add up to a story. And stories are exactly what get people to buy at the wrong moment.

My honest take, hype sits on top of one of the strongest businesses in crypto, and that's exactly why people get careless with it. The coin can be great and your timing can be terrible. Anyway, three things to watch. The next big release on the schedule around the 6th of November 2026, whether that $329 million buyer is ever named and the CFTC's final rules on per coming to America. Tell me in the comments if Hyperlquid open to Americans.

What's the first thing you do with your hype? And look, none of this is financial advice, guys. It's just me, my take after a lot of digging. Crypto carries risk and what's happened before is no guarantee of what comes next. Thanks for watching guys.
