XRP News, October 2026: RLUSD Custody, Paxos, Lending And A Bug Fix

October 2026 XRP news in one place: Standard Chartered RLUSD custody, Ripple Prime, Paxos, Clearpool lending, the XRPL bug fix and FNB, checked against sources.

XRP news roundup, October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Standard Chartered now holds RLUSD for institutions in Dubai, but using RLUSD as collateral at LMAX is still a plan with no go-live date.
  • Ripple Prime's deal with Brevan Howard is a prime brokerage agreement; the October release describes no role for XRP.
  • Paxos lists XRP for trading and custody, but no partner such as PayPal or Schwab has announced XRP through Paxos as of mid-October 2026.
  • The XRP Ledger overflow bug was fixed on 25 September 2026, and the official report found no evidence it was exploited on any public network.
  • Tokenized-asset totals for the XRP Ledger differ by a factor of about nine depending on whether you count distributed or represented value.

Between late September and mid-October 2026, XRP and Ripple showed up in seven separate stories: a bank custody launch, a hedge fund deal, a ledger bug, a lending plan, a brokerage listing, a South African bank and a fight over how to measure tokenized assets. The short answer for holders: several large firms now touch XRP or RLUSD, but much of it is either for institutions only or still planned, and none of the primary documents ties these deals to XRP demand.

Below, each story gets the date, what happened, why it matters to someone holding XRP, and the open question we would keep an eye on. Facts are as of 15 October 2026.

Story Status as of mid-October 2026 Does the primary source name XRP?
Standard Chartered RLUSD custody Custody live in Dubai; LMAX collateral planned No, RLUSD only
Ripple Prime and Brevan Howard Signed agreement Only in Ripple’s boilerplate
XRP Ledger overflow bug Fixed 25 September Yes, the bug could have created XRP
Clearpool lending Vote held; ledger features not live RLUSD loans; XRP only as the fee
Paxos brokerage XRP supported for partners Yes; no partner has announced it
FNB in South Africa Live, no transfers in or out Yes, one of five coins
rwa.xyz totals Data, changes daily Counts XRP Ledger assets, not XRP

Is Standard Chartered’s RLUSD custody live, or only planned?

Part of it is live. In early October 2026, Standard Chartered said its branch in Dubai’s financial centre (DIFC) now offers institutional custody for RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar stablecoin. The same release describes a second step, using RLUSD as collateral at the trading firm LMAX through “collateral mirroring”, as planned and subject to conditions, with no go-live date.

The story has a clear trail. Dubai’s regulator recognised RLUSD in June 2025, Ripple committed $150 million in financing to LMAX in January 2026, and LMAX named Standard Chartered its digital asset custodian in September 2026.

Why it matters: a global bank holding a stablecoin issued on the XRP Ledger is a real step for RLUSD. The XRP link is narrower. Each XRP Ledger transaction destroys a small XRP fee, and that is all the documents show.

Open question: when, and on which ledger, the collateral piece goes live.

What did Ripple Prime’s Brevan Howard deal actually say?

On 6 October 2026, Ripple announced that Ripple Prime will provide multi-asset prime brokerage, clearing and financing to funds run by Brevan Howard, a manager with about $35 billion. Ripple Prime is the former Hidden Road, which Ripple agreed to buy for $1.25 billion in April 2025. Brevan Howard also took part in Ripple’s $500 million funding round in November 2025.

Why it matters: it shows Ripple the company winning institutional business. But the October release describes no role for XRP; XRP appears only in the company boilerplate. In April 2025 Ripple said Hidden Road would move post-trade activity to the XRP Ledger and use RLUSD as collateral, and in November 2025 Ripple said Ripple Prime was expanding into collateralized lending for XRP. Those are Ripple’s statements, not details of this deal.

Open question: whether any Ripple Prime activity for clients like Brevan Howard ever settles on the XRP Ledger. We covered the wider gap between Ripple’s business and XRP in Ripple Prime and the XRP price.

Was the XRP Ledger bug that could have created XRP exploited?

According to the official report, no. The XRP Ledger Foundation’s disclosure says an integer overflow in the payment engine could have been used to create XRP from nothing. It was reported on 22 September 2026 through the bug bounty, credited to Cayden Liao and Veria AI, and fixed in xrpld 3.4.1 on 25 September. More than 80% of validators on the default list had upgraded that day. The report found no evidence the bug was used on any public network.

Why it matters: it was the first time a change to transaction processing shipped without an amendment vote, and the source code was published only later, by 9 October. The Block reported a debate over that delay. A separate Batch bug was fixed through amendments enabled on 9 October, with no loss of funds.

Open question: how future critical fixes will balance speed against open review. Our full write-up is the XRP Ledger overflow bug explained.

Is Clearpool’s lending on the XRP Ledger live yet?

Not yet. On 25 September 2026, Clearpool opened a one-week governance vote to expand to the XRP Ledger and swap its CPOOL token for a new CLEAR token one for one. Loans would be made and repaid in RLUSD, with Cicada Partners as underwriter and Hex Trust as custodian, according to Crowdfund Insider. Ripple invests as a lender on equal terms and is not a backstop.

The product runs on two new ledger features, Single Asset Vaults and the Lending Protocol. These loans are uncollateralized, with off-chain credit checks, and first-loss capital reduces but does not remove the risk of losses.

Why it matters: lending would be one of the biggest new uses of the ledger. But the features need validator support above 80% for two weeks, and as of mid-October no launch date was confirmed. Some trade sites report the Clearpool vote passed with about 97%; we have not found that result on a Clearpool page.

Open question: when the lending amendments activate on mainnet.

Does Paxos adding XRP mean PayPal and Schwab will offer it?

Not on the record. On 7 October 2026, Paxos posted that partners “can now offer XRP”, and Paxos’s own developer docs list XRP on the XRP Ledger for trading and custody. The partner names in the headlines (PayPal, Venmo, Interactive Brokers, Schwab) came from the XRP Ledger Foundation, not Paxos, crypto.news reported.

As of 13 October 2026, PayPal’s US coin list did not include XRP, and Schwab’s announced plans covered Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink, per The Block. Apps choose suppliers coin by coin: Interactive Brokers added XRP in March 2025 through a different provider.

Why it matters: a supplier supporting a coin removes one barrier, but the customer-facing app still has to choose it, and each app decides its own customer-facing list. Paxos says it is federally chartered by the OCC and holds assets on a fiduciary basis. Fake “PayPal now supports XRP, claim here” messages tend to follow headlines like this, so check the app itself rather than a link.

Open question: whether any partner announces XRP itself. Until then, treat “XRP is coming to PayPal” posts as unconfirmed.

Why can’t XRP leave South Africa’s FNB?

On 6 October 2026, First National Bank added crypto trading to its share-investing platform with the exchange VALR, TechCentral reported. Customers can buy Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and USDT from R10, around the clock, according to FNB’s own page and ITWeb.

The catch: coins cannot be transferred in or out. There are no withdrawals to your own wallet or another exchange, and no deposits. TechCentral reports FNB cited platform security and a conservative approach to compliance and exchange control laws.

Why it matters: a large bank listing XRP next to Bitcoin is a sign of mainstream access. But you hold a position inside a bank platform, not XRP in a wallet you control. FNB’s page and the reports we read do not say who the custodian is, what the fees are, or what happens if a provider fails.

Open question: whether FNB ever allows withdrawals. FNB’s Mkhize called it “just a start”.

Why do tokenized-asset totals for the XRP Ledger disagree?

Because two different things are being counted. The data site rwa.xyz splits tokenized assets into “distributed” (tokens that can move to wallets outside the issuer’s platform) and “represented” (tokens that cannot), and explains why in a November 2025 post.

As of 13 October 2026, rwa.xyz’s XRP Ledger page showed about $496 million distributed and $4.47 billion represented. Stellar’s page showed the reverse pattern: about $3.54 billion distributed and $78 million represented. The default league table uses the distributed figure, so the ranking flips depending on the view.

Why it matters: when a post quotes a tokenized-asset number for the XRP Ledger, check which metric it uses. A $2.5 billion figure circulating on one site matches neither rwa.xyz metric, so we left it out. Our tokenization explainer covers the basic risks.

Open question: these are single-source figures that change daily, and none of them says anything about XRP’s price.

What to watch next

  • Any Standard Chartered or LMAX notice that RLUSD collateral mirroring is live.
  • Validator support for the XRP Ledger lending amendments, and a Clearpool launch date.
  • A PayPal, Venmo, Schwab or other Paxos partner statement naming XRP.
  • Whether RippleX publishes a plan for disclosing future critical fixes.
  • FNB’s terms on custody and transfers.

When you read the next XRP headline, ask four questions: is it live or planned, who said it, does the primary document mention XRP, and where would your coins actually sit.

Frequently asked questions

Does Standard Chartered's RLUSD custody use XRP?

The bank's release covers custody of RLUSD, a dollar stablecoin issued on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. The link to XRP is indirect: every XRP Ledger transaction destroys a small XRP fee. The release says nothing about XRP's price.

Can I buy XRP on PayPal now that Paxos supports it?

Not as of 13 October 2026. PayPal's US coin list did not include XRP, and no Paxos partner had announced XRP. Each app decides its own coin list.

Is the XRP Ledger lending protocol live?

No. As of mid-October 2026 the lending amendments still needed validator support of more than 80% for two weeks, and no launch date had been confirmed.

Was any XRP created by the overflow bug?

The XRP Ledger Foundation's disclosure report says there is no evidence the bug was exploited on any public network. It was patched in xrpld 3.4.1 on 25 September 2026.
