Tokenized Stocks News, October 2026: What You Actually Own
October 2026 tokenized stock news: the SEC's Innovation Exemption, Securitize on Solana, Ondo, HashPack, Cardano's CIP-113 and who owns a tokenized share.

Key takeaways
- Most tokenized stocks are not the share itself: some give a legal claim on a share held for you, others give only economic exposure.
- The SEC's Innovation Exemption of 17 September 2026 requires tokenized NMS stock on qualifying venues to carry the same rights as the underlying share; synthetic exposure does not qualify.
- Securitize's new stock tokens are security entitlements under UCC Article 8, the same legal form as shares held in street name.
- Ondo's stocks, portfolios and private-market notes are offered only to eligible non-US persons and give no ownership rights in the underlying.
- Self-custody of a token does not change what the token is: a wallet key controls the token, not the share.
- Before holding any tokenized stock, read who the issuer is, what the token links to, and what happens if the issuer fails.
Tokenized stocks went from a niche product to a regular headline in September and October 2026. The SEC opened a five-year path for trading them on-chain, Securitize launched US-available stock tokens on Solana, a wallet on Hedera started swapping into Apple and Tesla tokens, and a coalition of market firms set out to make tokens that sit on the official shareholder register.
The answer to the question most holders ask, “do I own the share?”, is usually no, or not directly. What you own depends on the issuer’s documents. Each section below gives the date, what happened, what you would actually hold and the open question. Facts are as of 15 October 2026.
| Product | What the token is | Open to US persons? |
|---|---|---|
| Securitize Stocks | Security entitlement to a share held for you | Yes, if eligible |
| Ondo Stocks | Economic exposure, no right to the share | No |
| Ondo Intelligent Portfolios | Token over Ondo Stocks, no claim on the underlying | No |
| Ondo Private Markets | Note, an obligation of the issuer | No |
| Robinhood stock tokens via HashPack | Debt security, no rights in the share | No |
| Issuer-sponsored tokens | Linked to the company’s own register | Depends on the venue |
| Veridian shares on Cardano | Swiss ledger-based security | Not offered to the public |
What does the SEC’s tokenized stocks exemption allow?
On 17 September 2026, the SEC issued its “Innovation Exemption”: temporary, conditional relief letting qualifying venues trade tokenized NMS stock through permissioned automated liquidity pools without registering as exchanges. Liquidity providers using their own capital are exempt from dealer rules. It lasts five years, to 17 September 2031 per Mayer Brown.
The fact sheet says tokens must carry the same rights as the underlying share, and synthetic exposure does not qualify. Law firms reading the order describe caps of 75 symbols in Tier 1 and 250 in Tier 2, with volume limits. Issuers get 30 days’ notice to object to third-party tokens.
Why it matters: it is an order in effect, not a proposal, but it is narrow. Commissioner Peirce wrote “This order is not about decentralized finance”. Related: the SEC’s transfer agent proposal.
Open question: the SEC asked for comments with no deadline listed.
What do you own with Securitize Stocks on Solana?
A security entitlement. On 8 October 2026, Securitize launched Securitize Stocks: tokens for 12 US stocks including Apple, Nvidia and Tesla on Solana, each backed one for one by a share and settling in USDC, with Jump Trading as market maker. Eligible investors in the US, EU and other permitted jurisdictions can use it, CoinDesk reported.
Each token is a security entitlement under UCC Article 8. That is the same legal form as shares held “in street name” at a broker. Under UCC 8-503, assets an intermediary holds for entitlement holders are not its property, subject to exceptions. Securitize says backing shares are not lent out.
Why it matters: this is closer to a normal brokerage position than many tokens, and it is available to eligible US investors.
Open question: the planned NYSE and OKX-ICE venues had not launched. CoinDesk names a clearing partner; the release names no custodian, and the customer terms page did not load for us.
Why can’t US holders buy Ondo’s tokenized stocks?
Ondo’s own terms keep them offshore. Ondo Global Markets says Ondo Stocks are issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited, offered only outside the US to eligible non-US persons, and give economic exposure, not the right to hold or receive the shares. Minting and redemption can be halted. The tokens run on Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana.
Ondo also lets these tokens be used as collateral on Ondo Perps, a pre-alpha product with up to 20x leverage outside the US, The Block reported.
Ondo does not give a reason for the US restriction. The SEC’s general rule, on Investor.gov, is that securities offered to US investors must be registered or exempt. The SEC also has an investor page on tokenized securities.
Why it matters: “economic exposure” means you track the price but are not a shareholder.
Open question: whether Ondo seeks a US route under the new SEC order. See also Robinhood Chain stock tokens.
Are Ondo’s “BlackRock” portfolios run by BlackRock?
No, according to Ondo’s own disclosures. On 24 September 2026, Ondo launched Intelligent Portfolios: three tokens (BLKHIon, BLKDIGon, BLKGRWon) based on strategies BlackRock developed for Ondo, rebalanced on a fixed schedule by smart contract, holding Ondo Stocks underneath.
The disclosure page says BlackRock’s role is limited to nondiscretionary model strategies. BlackRock is not the adviser, manager, sponsor or distributor, and has no advisory or fiduciary relationship with investors. Ondo manages the portfolios, which may differ from the strategies. Investors have “no right, title, interest or claim” in the underlying.
Availability: not in the US, only eligible non-US persons, not registered under the 1933 Act. An EU base prospectus was approved in Liechtenstein, Blockhead reported.
Why it matters: a famous name in the product title does not mean that firm manages your money.
Open question: fees and rebalance dates were not stated on the pages as of 13 October.
What is Ondo’s pre-IPO AI note?
A note, not a share. On 6 October 2026, Ondo launched Ondo Private Markets, with notes tied to the per-share value of a private company at a qualifying liquidity event such as an IPO. The first market references a pre-IPO AI company Ondo did not name. The Block confirmed the key terms.
The notes are obligations of the issuer, with no ownership or shareholder rights. They are for non-US persons only and not registered under the Securities Act. Ondo says they can trade 24/7 and are freely transferable.
Why it matters: your return depends on the issuer paying and on a liquidity event happening. Pricing a private company between funding rounds is hard.
Open question: the release does not state the issuing entity, chain, backing, maturity or the company’s name. Ondo is also in a control dispute in court after its founder’s death; De Bode calls the estate’s claims meritless and the court has not ruled.
What do HashPack’s stock tokens on Hedera give you?
The key to a token, not the share. On 8 October 2026, the Hedera wallet HashPack said users can swap into AAPL, NVDA, TSLA and SPY tokens through SODAX, tracing back to Robinhood’s stock token lineup. Hedera does not issue them, availability varies by region and HashPack has published no fee schedule.
Robinhood’s own disclosure says its stock tokens are debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, giving no legal or beneficial rights in the shares, backed one for one. Its FAQ says they are not available to US persons, and in an insolvency a security agent would sell the shares and pay holders cash.
Why it matters: a self-custody wallet controls the token, but the token is still an issuer’s claim. The SEC staff’s January 2026 statement separates issuer-sponsored from third-party tokens and flags third-party bankruptcy risk.
Open question: whether the Hedera tokens are Robinhood’s own or wrapped versions. We found no Robinhood statement confirming the HashPack route.
What is the Issuer Sponsored Token Coalition?
A group pushing for tokens that sit on the company’s own shareholder register. On 24 September 2026, Bullish and Equiniti convened the coalition with Alpaca, Apex Fintech Solutions and DriveWealth among the first participants. The release says it is non-binding, open and non-exclusive.
CoinDesk reported that the aim is tokens carrying voting, dividends and corporate actions, and that a dispute between AMC’s CEO and Robinhood had highlighted the question. CoinDesk’s parent company is Bullish.
Why it matters: this is the difference the SEC’s new order cares about. An issuer-sponsored token links to the real register; an exposure token links to an issuer’s promise. Different, not better or worse, but you should know which one you hold.
Open question: which listed companies sign up. Bullish also agreed to buy Equiniti for $4.2 billion, with closing expected in January 2027.
Can a Cardano tokenized share be frozen or seized?
Yes, by design. On 7 October 2026, the Cardano Foundation said CIP-113 “programmable tokens” went live on mainnet without a hard fork. The standard’s text lets a script approve every move, and allows third-party logic for seizure or forced transfers “without explicit user permission”, with a freeze-and-seize substandard. Its official status is still “Proposed”.
The first user came a day later. On 8 October, the Foundation spun out Veridian, a Swiss digital identity company, which tokenized its own shares on CIP-113 as ledger-based securities under Swiss law, CoinDesk reported. CoinDesk says the shares are not offered to the public, and strategic investors are sought in 2027.
Why it matters: freeze and seize powers are normal for securities, but they mean the issuer, not your key, has the last word.
Open question: who can invoke those powers for each token. The standard sets “no constraint on who, if anyone, may invoke”. Nothing gives ADA holders a claim on Veridian.
What to watch next
- Which venues file the 30-day public notice to operate under the SEC exemption.
- Launch of the NYSE and OKX-ICE tokenized stock venues.
- Listed companies joining the Issuer Sponsored Token Coalition.
- Ondo’s court case and any US product plans.
- CIP-113 moving from “Proposed” to “Active”.
Three questions to ask before holding any tokenized stock: who issued the token, what does it legally link to, and what happens to holders if the issuer fails?

Frequently asked questions
Do tokenized stocks give voting rights and dividends?
It depends on the product. Issuer-sponsored tokens linked to the official shareholder register aim to carry those rights. Exposure tokens such as Ondo Stocks or Robinhood Stock Tokens say they give no shareholder rights.
Can US investors buy tokenized stocks?
Some products, such as Securitize Stocks, are offered to eligible US investors. Others, including Ondo's and Robinhood's stock tokens, are not offered to US persons, according to their own terms.
What is the SEC's Innovation Exemption?
An SEC order issued on 17 September 2026 that gives temporary, conditional relief for certain venues to trade tokenized NMS stock through permissioned liquidity pools. It runs for five years and has volume and symbol limits.
Can a tokenized share be frozen?
Often yes. Standards such as Cardano's CIP-113 let issuers set freeze and seizure rules at the token level, and many issuers keep these powers for compliance.
