XRP and Swift: Garlinghouse's 2018 Claim vs Swift's Own Ledger
In 2018 Brad Garlinghouse said Ripple was taking over Swift. Swift built its own ledger instead. Here is where Chainlink and Ripple Prime now fit.

Key takeaways
- In a November 2018 Bloomberg interview, Brad Garlinghouse said Ripple was 'in fact taking over Swift' because it had signed up well over 100 banks. Nearly eight years later, Swift has not been replaced.
- Swift's own blockchain ledger went live on 9 July 2026, with 17 banks preparing to pilot tokenized cross-border payments. It is built on Hyperledger Besu, which is Ethereum compatible.
- The video says Chainlink, not Ripple, won the role of connecting Swift's ledger to other blockchains. What is confirmed is that Chainlink announced at Sibos 2026 that it is helping banks connect to the ledger through its CRE platform.
- Ripple's response, per the video, is a separate institutional stack built around Ripple Prime (formerly Hidden Road), the XRP Ledger and its RLUSD stablecoin.
- RLUSD, not XRP, is the collateral Ripple named for its prime brokerage. Any extra demand for the XRP token depends on how much the stack actually uses XRP, which is worth checking before reading too much into Ripple business news.
In a November 2018 Bloomberg interview, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said Ripple was “in fact taking over Swift”, the global bank messaging network. That has not happened. Swift built its own blockchain ledger, which went live in July 2026 with 17 pilot banks, and the video says Chainlink, not Ripple, won the job of linking it to other blockchains.
The Swift takeover story has shaped what many XRP holders expect for years. The video argues the story has not failed so much as changed, with Ripple now building a separate system for institutions. Whether that system creates demand for the XRP token itself is the question that matters most for holders.
What did Brad Garlinghouse say about Swift in 2018?
Brad Garlinghouse told Bloomberg in November 2018 that Ripple was taking over Swift day by day, because it had “signed up, you know, well over 100 banks.” The interview was filmed on the sidelines of an event in Singapore. The video dates the clip to April 2018, but coverage of the interview is dated 13 and 14 November 2018. In the same interview he described a remittance company using Ripple’s technology. It cut its price per transaction from $20 to $2 and saw an 800% jump in usage.
The video sets the clip against XRP’s 2017 run, which it puts at around 25,000%, making XRP the best-performing digital asset that year. By November 2018, though, XRP was already well below its January 2018 peak. Holders compared Ripple’s pitch with Swift’s scale. The video cites more than $150 trillion a year in cross-border payments across 11,500 financial institutions in 200 countries. The video says price targets of $10, $50 and even $500 circulated among analysts. Those were speculation then and remain speculation now.
According to the video, the years that followed brought a range-bound XRP price. Swift kept operating, and banks did not switch over. The video calls this seven years. Counted from late 2018, it is closer to eight.
What did Swift build instead?
Swift built its own shared blockchain ledger for banks. Swift announced the ledger at its Sibos banking conference in Frankfurt on 29 September 2025. It described “one trusted connection to orchestrate transactions across digital ecosystems” with “a common compliant framework.”
The ledger went live as a minimum viable product on 9 July 2026, about nine months later. Swift posted that it was “implemented in 9 months, global from day one,” with 17 banks across six continents preparing to pilot tokenized cross-border payments. The banks are:
- ANZ, BNP Paribas, BNY, Citi, DBS, First Abu Dhabi Bank
- FirstRand, HSBC, Itaú Unibanco, Lloyds, Mashreq, MUFG
- OCBC, Standard Chartered, UBS, UOB and Wells Fargo
On 19 August 2026, HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live tokenized deposit transaction on the ledger. A tokenized deposit is a bank deposit represented as a token on a blockchain. The ledger runs on Hyperledger Besu, which is compatible with Ethereum. For more background, see Bullrunners’ explainer on what Swift’s live ledger means for XRP.
What role does Chainlink play with Swift’s ledger?
The video says Swift needed a way to connect its new ledger to other blockchains, a cross-chain bridge for institutional money, and that Swift gave that role to Chainlink rather than Ripple. What can be confirmed is narrower. At Sibos 2026, Chainlink announced that it is helping banks connect to Swift’s ledger through its Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE). That announcement does not show an exclusive contract between Swift and Chainlink. The video frames the role as one Ripple had pitched for itself, but it does not say why Chainlink was picked.
Some of the video’s other Chainlink points check out and some do not:
- Chainlink launched CCIP 2.0, the new version of its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, on 28 September 2026 at Sibos in Miami.
- The video says Chainlink moves over $340 billion of real-world assets onchain. Bullrunners could not verify that figure.
- Chainlink is working with DTCC, the US securities settlement company, on 24/7 collateral management. DTCC’s Collateral AppChain, which uses Chainlink, is expected in the first quarter of 2027, so it is not live yet. The video says this work could unlock around $80 trillion of collateral that currently sits idle.
- At Sibos 2026, Chainlink CEO Sergey Nazarov and DTCC’s Dan Doney, whom the video calls DTCC’s digital asset chief, demonstrated a cross-chain securities financing deal. The video says a pension fund funded a hedge fund loan using tokenized Microsoft stock as collateral. According to the video, the trade moved across two blockchains and settled in two seconds.
The video also says JPMorgan, Deutsche Börse’s Crypto Finance and Microsoft are involved, without saying in what way. It adds that Ripple was not on stage, in the demo or in the press release. Bullrunners has covered how Chainlink connects to Swift’s ledger in more detail.
What is Ripple’s prime broker strategy?
Ripple’s answer, according to the video, is to build its own system that does not depend on Swift or Chainlink. The centerpiece is the prime broker Hidden Road, which Ripple agreed to buy for $1.25 billion in April 2025. The deal closed in October 2025, and the business now operates as Ripple Prime.
In Garlinghouse’s words, a prime broker is “a one-stop shop” for asset managers such as hedge funds, trading desks and market makers. He said this business has historically been owned by large commercial banks such as JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs. Ripple has described itself as the first crypto company to own one.
When it announced the deal in April 2025, Ripple said:
- Hidden Road cleared about $3 trillion a year for over 300 institutional clients.
- Ripple planned to move the firm’s post-trade activity to the XRP Ledger.
- Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin would serve as collateral across its prime brokerage products.
The video does not show how far those plans have progressed.
The video calls the result a “parallel stack”: prime brokerage, a stablecoin, a settlement ledger, custody and cross-border payments, all under Ripple. It cites Ripple’s 60-plus regulatory licenses, though reports from March 2026 put the count above 75.
It also points to the end of the SEC case. In 2023, Judge Analisa Torres ruled that XRP itself is not a security. She also found that Ripple’s sales to institutional buyers broke securities law, which led to a $125 million penalty. Ripple and the SEC both dropped their appeals on 7 August 2025.
The video’s section on exchange-traded funds appears to date from 2025. It describes spot XRP ETF filings from Bitwise, Franklin Templeton and Grayscale as still pending. That is out of date. Spot XRP ETFs have been trading since November 2025, and the Bitwise XRP ETF started on 19 November 2025.
Three systems side by side
The video describes three separate efforts now running in parallel.
| Player | What it built | Who it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Swift | Its own blockchain ledger on Hyperledger Besu | Traditional banks (17 in the pilot) |
| Chainlink | Tools to connect banks to Swift’s ledger (CRE), CCIP 2.0, DTCC collateral work | Banks, DTCC and institutions moving assets across chains |
| Ripple | Ripple Prime brokerage, RLUSD as collateral, XRP Ledger settlement | Hedge funds, trading desks and market makers |
Does the parallel stack help XRP holders?
The video’s answer is that the XRP thesis “didn’t lose, it changed.” In its view, XRP is no longer about replacing Swift but about being the settlement rail for Ripple’s institutional system. That is the host’s interpretation, not something Ripple says in the video.
The video’s own details point to a gap holders should keep in mind. The collateral Ripple named for its prime brokerage is RLUSD, a dollar stablecoin that is a separate token from XRP. Post-trade activity on the XRP Ledger uses the network, but the video does not explain how much XRP the stack would actually need or hold. A business win for Ripple is not automatically a price win for XRP. Bullrunners has covered this in why a Ripple win isn’t automatically an XRP win and in its look at Ripple Prime and the XRP price.
What to watch next
The useful signals are concrete ones rather than old interview clips:
- Ripple Prime’s use of the XRP Ledger. Look for public details on what settles on the ledger and whether XRP itself is used, not just RLUSD.
- RLUSD’s size. Published supply figures show whether the stablecoin is growing as a collateral asset.
- Swift’s ledger pilots. Watch whether the 17 banks move from pilots to regular tokenized payments, and which networks connect to the ledger.
- DTCC’s Collateral AppChain. Check whether it launches in the first quarter of 2027 as expected, and at what scale.
Nearly eight years on, the 2018 claim that Ripple would replace Swift has not come true. In its place is a set of separate, measurable projects. Holders can judge those on the evidence as it arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Did Brad Garlinghouse say Ripple would take over Swift?
Yes. In a November 2018 Bloomberg interview he was asked whether Ripple could take over Swift one day. He said that what Ripple was doing day by day was 'in fact taking over Swift', pointing to well over 100 banks signed up.
Is Swift's blockchain ledger live?
Yes. Swift's ledger went live as a minimum viable product on 9 July 2026, with 17 banks across six continents preparing to pilot tokenized cross-border payments. HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live tokenized deposit transaction on it on 19 August 2026.
Does Swift's new ledger use XRP or Chainlink?
The ledger is built on Hyperledger Besu, which is Ethereum compatible. The video says Chainlink was chosen to connect the ledger to other blockchains and that Ripple was not part of that announcement. What has been confirmed is that Chainlink said at Sibos 2026 it is helping banks connect to the ledger through its Chainlink Runtime Environment.
What is Ripple Prime, formerly Hidden Road?
Ripple Prime is the prime broker Ripple agreed to buy as Hidden Road for $1.25 billion in April 2025. The deal closed in October 2025, when the business was renamed. At the time of the deal, Ripple said Hidden Road cleared about $3 trillion a year for over 300 institutional clients and that it planned to move post-trade activity to the XRP Ledger.

So, right now there is a 7-year-old Brad Garlinghouse clip circulating on Crypto Twitter that is making every XRP holder on Earth absolutely furious. Just watch this.
Is there a possibility that Ripple could take over Swift one day?
Well, I think what we're doing and executing on a day-by-day basis is in fact taking over Swift in that, you know, we've now signed up, you know, well over 100 banks.
Now, that was the thesis the whole community has lived on for seven straight years. And last September, Swift walked on stage in Frankfurt and did something nobody in this crypto thought was actually possible. They built their own blockchain and brought 17 banks live on it, including Citi, HSBC, UBS, and Standard Chartered. And the cross-chain contract that was supposed to be Brad's crown, Swift handed it to Chainlink instead of Ripple. And Chainlink is now wired straight into Swift's entire blockchain stack.
So, did Brad lose the biggest war in crypto or did he quietly pull off a $1.25 billion countermove that nobody in this space is actually talking about?
[music]
All right, bull runners, welcome back to the channel. If you're feeling bullish, like this video. And if you're going to become the first millionaire in your family tree, confirm it right now by subscribing to the channel and commenting 777 below. Let's jump straight into the video. So, rewind the tape to April of 2018.
XRP had just run 25,000% the year before. Best-performing digital asset of 2017. Brad was doing the global media circuit. And on that same Bloomberg interview, he dropped the actual proof behind the Swift claim. Numbers he hasn't been able to walk back ever since.
Watch this.
I mean, just last week we saw a a a remittance company who's using Ripple's technology, they reduced the price per transaction to their consumers from $20 per transaction to $2 per transaction, and they saw an 800% increase in usage overnight.
Now, look, those are the receipts that locked the entire XRP community into the Swift thesis for the next 7 years. Every XRP holder on Earth watched that clip and did the math. Swift moves the equivalent of global GDP every 3 days. Over $150 trillion a year in cross-border payments. 11,500 financial institutions in 200 countries.
And Brad was saying XRP eats that. XRP becomes the bridge asset for the entire global financial system. And the price, it would reflect it. $10, $50. Some analysts were throwing out $500. And it made perfect sense.
Then nothing happened for 7 years. Price range-bound, Swift not dying, and the banks not switching. XRP holders getting called delusional on every Twitter space on Earth. And meanwhile, every single one of us was told to just keep holding, keep stacking, keep waiting for the big day that Brad kept telling the Bloomberg cameras was already happening. Then last September, something cracked open at the Sibos conference in Frankfurt.
Now, Sibos is the biggest banking conference on the planet, hosted by Swift every year. And every major bank sends their top brass. And last September, Swift walked on stage and announced something nobody saw coming. Just listen to the exact words.
The Swift ledger will deliver one [music] trusted connection to orchestrate transactions across digital ecosystems. No fragmentation, just more seamless [music] access.
Look at the language Swift is using there. And remember, this is the exact institution XRP was supposed to replace. Now, watch what they describe next.
With coordinated flows across borders and forms of value,
[music]
and a common compliant framework which will ensure consistent and interoperable digital transactions.
Now, do you feel the weight of that? Swift just walked on stage, described a blockchain ledger that behaves exactly like the one Ripple pitched for 7 years, and started shipping it to the biggest banks on Earth. And then, 9 months later in July of 2026, the thing went live. Minimum viable product shipped. Swift posted this receipt on their own X account.
Implemented in 9 months, global from day one. 17 banks across six continents preparing to pilot real tokenized cross-border payments. Now, let me read you the list. ANZ, BNP Paribas, BNY, Society, DBS, First Abu Dhabi, First Rand, HSBC, Itaú Unibanco, Lloyds, Mashreq, MUFG, OCBC, Standard Chartered, UBS, UOB, and Wells Fargo. That's 17 of the biggest banks on Earth.
And HSBC and Standard Chartered just did the first live tokenized deposit transaction on it in a few weeks. The thing isn't theoretical anymore. It's live, built on Hyperledger Besu, which is Ethereum compatible. And here's the part that broke every XRP holder's brain. Swift needed a plumbing layer, something to connect their new ledger to every other blockchain out there, a cross-chain bridge for institutional money.
And that contract should have been Ripple's. That's literally the pitch Brad made for 7 years. Instead, Swift handed the keys to Chainlink. And Chainlink even broke the news on their own X account. And then, CCIP 2.0 launched at Sibos 2026 in Miami.
Chainlink CEO, Sergey Nazarov, walked onto that stage, and a reporter asked him his business philosophy. Just watch his face.
Finish the sentence. My business philosophy is
winning.
Now, do you feel the arrogance in that answer? That is the CEO of the company that just locked in a contract Ripple spent 7 years trying to win. And Chainlink is now moving over $340 billion dollars of real-world assets on chain. They just locked up a deal with DTCC for 24/7 collateral management. Now that one deal alone unlocks around 80 trillion dollars of collateral that today just sits idle because the big institutions can't move it around fast enough.
Sergey Nazarov and DTCC's digital asset chief Dan Donny went on stage at Cypher Boss and ran a live demo where a pension fund funded a hedge fund loan with Microsoft stock as tokenized collateral, bridged across two blockchains and settled in two seconds. So JP Morgan is in, Deutsche Börse Crypto Finance is in, Microsoft is in, and Swift, the exact institution XRP holders were told was dead, just handed Chainlink the interoperability contract. Chainlink even posted their own victory lap after Cypher Boss wrapped. Year seven at Cypher Boss officially complete. And Ripple wasn't on that stage.
Ripple wasn't in the demo. Ripple wasn't even in the press release. But here's the question every single XRP holder has been afraid to ask. Did Brad lose? Was the whole seven-year thesis just wrong?
And this is where 90% of crypto YouTube is going to tell you yes, cope, and sell your bags. But that's not what's actually happening. Because while everyone was watching that the Chainlink booth, Brad quietly made a move that most of this industry still hasn't processed. So we're going to rewind to April of 2025. Ripple writes a check for 1.25 billion dollars, buys a company called Hidden Road.
Now most people in this space had never even heard the name. And I bet you're thinking, what is Hidden Road? And here's Brad on prime brokers.
Prime broker is really a one-stop shop that allows all kinds of different asset managers, whether these are well-known hedge funds, trading desks, market makers.
Right, so Ripple just bought itself a seat at a table where every big hedge fund and trading desk on earth gets their clearing done. But here's the part that matters.
And these guys [music] are doing trillions of dollars of trades. Historically, those have been really owned by the traditional uh commercial banks, the JP Morgans, the Goldman Sachs.
So, those are the biggest players on Wall Street, and Ripple just made itself the first crypto company on Earth to own one of those seats. Hidden Road cleared $3 trillion in 2024 alone, over 300 institutional clients. Now, watch what happens next. Hidden Road is moving its post-trade activity to the XRPL ledger. Ripple's stablecoin RLYSD becomes the collateral across every prime brokerage product. $3 trillion a year in institutional trades settling on XRPL collateralized by RLYSD, and none of it going through Swift, none of it needing Chainlink.
And that's the parallel stack. And then the SEC case ended. The Gensler lawsuit dropped. The appeal gone. Ripple went from defendant to the one in the driver's seat, and now they're actually the ones talking about going on the offense.
Judge Torres had already ruled XRP itself was not a security back in 2023. The appeal was the last leverage Gary Gensler's team had, and this year they walked away from it entirely. Then the ETF floodgate opened. 11 spot XRP ETF filings sitting with the SEC right now from Bitwise, Franklin Templeton, Grayscale, and most of the biggest issuers on Wall Street. Brad has been publicly saying the first ones will be live in the second half of this year.
RLYSD, Ripple's own stablecoin, is on track for top five stablecoin status by the end of the year on their own internal targets. Now, why does that matter? Because every dollar of RLYSD is a dollar of institutional collateral that Hidden Road clients can use inside Ripple's own stack settled on XRPL without ever touching Swift. Now, if you add in 60-plus regulatory license globally, Ripple invited into the White House and a treasury that is suddenly working with crypto instead of against it. You can't make this up.
So, let me show you the picture nobody in this space is drawing. Swift absorbed blockchain for traditional banks. Chainlink built the plumbing between Swift and every other chain. And Ripple built the escape hatch, a full institutional stack that doesn't need Swift, doesn't need Chainlink, doesn't need to beg for a plumbing contract. Prime broker, stablecoin, settlement ledger, custody, cross-border payments, all under one roof.
And that is what 7 years of regulatory warfare, acquisition, and infrastructure building actually bought them. And none of it depends on Chainlink getting the Swift contract because Ripple is running on its own rails now. The XRP thesis didn't lose. It changed. It's not Swift replacement anymore.
It's the native settlement rail for an institutional DeFi stack that Swift and Chainlink physically can't touch. And that is what makes XRP interesting right now. Not the Swift war, the parallel stack. And the question for you the holder is that when does XRP flip Swift? Now, that ship has sailed, and it sailed a different direction than Brad told us in 2018.
The real question is, are you using your XRP inside the DeFi system Ripple is actually building, or are you still sitting on it waiting for a flip that redefined itself 4 years ago? Because the people making money in this cycle aren't waiting. They're putting their XRP to work. And look, if you've been sitting on your XRP bags for 7 years waiting for the Swift flip, watching the story change on you every 12 months, feeling like the goalposts moved again, I get it. I've been there.
I bought at the top in 2018. Watched it bleed for years. And I'll admit, felt stupid. And then one day I figured out that holding wasn't the play. Using the holdings was the play.
So, let me show you what that actually looks like when somebody stops watching from the sideline and walks through the door. His story is almost exactly the one Brad set up for the entire XRP community in 2018. John M, 69 years old, bought XRP right near the all-time high, then watched it bleed for years. Same chart every one of you knows by heart. Retirement plans had just blown up and he was looking for anything.
He joined the accelerator. First hour on the call with his coach James P, James found $25,000 of crypto John thought he had lost in a transfer and set up two D5 liquidity pools making him $23 a day in passive income on the exact same XRP bag that had been eroding for years. And in his own words, "It's like buying a house and collecting rent on it instead of watching it waste away." Now, results aren't typical, so don't be typical. And look, our members aren't guessing in the dark. We run weekly live coaching calls.
There's a private research chat with a team. And every one of them gets paired with their own one-on-one strategist from day one. And that is why the room keeps growing while most of the crypto space is still waiting for permission. So, if you've got 50,000 or more in crypto and you want a one-on-one strategist to walk you through the exact D5 position in our members are using, the first thing in the description takes you to a free training. And from there you can book a call.
Spots fill fast and if the calendar is full, check back in 24 to 48 hours. Now, crypto carries risk and past performance doesn't guarantee future results. This is education, not financial advice. So, the people who built the parallel stack aren't waiting for permission, they're building. And you can either keep watching or you can position.
Now, you know what to do. I'll see you at the top. Stay bullish. Oh.
