XRP vs Chainlink: Is One Replacing the Other?
Is XRP being replaced by Chainlink? No. XRP is a ledger's native asset used to move value. Chainlink is an oracle and cross-chain network. How they differ.

Video coming soon.
Key takeaways
- XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger and is used to move value. Chainlink is a network that delivers outside data to blockchains and passes messages and tokens between them.
- LINK pays Chainlink node operators and is staked to help secure the network. XRP pays XRP Ledger fees, which are destroyed, and can act as a bridge between currencies.
- Ripple chose Chainlink price feeds for its RLUSD stablecoin in January 2025. The two projects can work together rather than compete.
- A headline about Chainlink and Swift is not a headline about XRP losing a role. Check what each announcement actually says the technology does.
No, Chainlink is not replacing XRP. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, used to move and settle value. Chainlink is an oracle and cross-chain network that carries data and messages between systems, so the two do different jobs.
The question comes up because both projects show up in stories about banks, Swift and tokenized assets. A Chainlink headline can read like a loss for XRP. Looking at what each technology actually does makes the comparison much simpler.
XRP vs Chainlink at a glance
| XRP | Chainlink (LINK) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) | Token of the Chainlink oracle and interoperability network |
| Main job | Pay ledger fees and reserves, and bridge between currencies | Deliver outside data to blockchains and move messages and tokens between chains |
| Where it lives | Its own ledger, live since 2012 | An ERC-677 token on Ethereum, with services on many chains |
| Supply | 100 billion created at launch | 1 billion total supply |
| What happens to fees | Each transaction’s XRP fee is destroyed | Node operators are paid in LINK |
| Staking | None | LINK can be staked to help secure the network |
| Who started it | Ripple uses and holds XRP; the ledger was built by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto | Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, who started the company SmartContract in 2014 |
| Example use | Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity uses XRP as a bridge currency | Price feeds that tell lending apps what collateral is worth |
What does XRP do?
XRP is the asset built into the XRP Ledger, and it is used to move value. The XRP Ledger documentation describes three roles. Every transaction destroys a small XRP fee, normally 0.00001 XRP. Every account must keep a small XRP reserve. And the ledger’s built-in exchange can route a trade between two currencies through XRP, a feature called autobridging.
Ripple uses XRP in the same bridging role. Ripple has described its On-Demand Liquidity service as one that “leverages the digital asset XRP as a bridge currency.” A payment firm converts local money into XRP, sends it in seconds and converts it at the other end, so it does not need money parked in advance in the destination country. What does Chainlink do?
Chainlink brings outside information onto blockchains and connects blockchains to each other. A blockchain cannot see the outside world, so a smart contract on its own cannot know a price, a weather reading or whether a bank payment arrived. Chainlink’s own education pages call this the oracle problem.
Chainlink answers it with decentralized oracle networks, which use many independent nodes and data sources for one answer. Its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), live since July 2023, moves messages and tokens across public and private blockchains. What Chainlink is covers its history and its stress tests.
The LINK token pays for those services. Chainlink’s documentation says developers pay in LINK, node operators are compensated in LINK, and LINK can be staked to help secure the network, with penalties for failures.
Is Chainlink replacing XRP at Swift or the banks?
No. Chainlink’s work with Swift is about connecting banks’ systems to blockchains, not about choosing a bridge currency. On September 28, 2026, Chainlink said it is working to let banks connect to Swift’s new blockchain ledger through its Runtime Environment (CRE). The release describes work in progress, not a live service.
That announcement came from Chainlink, not Swift. Swift’s own ledger announcements do not name the LINK token, and Swift chose Consensys, not Chainlink, for the first phase of the ledger prototype. The Chainlink, Swift and CRE story walks through the full timeline.
None of this changes how XRP works on the XRP Ledger. A bank connecting to Swift’s ledger through Chainlink is a separate decision from a payment firm using XRP through Ripple.
Do XRP and Chainlink ever work together?
Yes. Ripple chose Chainlink for its own stablecoin’s price data. On January 7, 2025, Ripple announced that Chainlink price feeds for Ripple USD (RLUSD) were live on Ethereum, so lending and trading apps could use reliable RLUSD prices. Ripple said it picked Chainlink for its data from many exchanges and its protection against single points of failure.
That example shows the real relationship. Ripple’s stablecoin needed an oracle, and Chainlink is an oracle. One project supplied a service the other needed.
Where do XRP and Chainlink overlap?
XRP and Chainlink overlap mainly in the audience they court, not in the job they do. Both pitch banks, payment firms and tokenized-asset projects. Both have holders who read each partnership as a sign their token will be needed.
For either token, the honest question is the same. When a bank uses Ripple’s or Chainlink’s technology, does that use require the token itself? Ripple’s payments now settle in XRP, RLUSD, other stablecoins or fiat, according to its website as of October 2026. Chainlink lets users pay for some services in other tokens, such as stablecoins, which are then converted into LINK. In both cases, read the announcement for what the token does.
Checklist for reading an XRP or Chainlink headline
- Find the original source. Was it announced by the bank, by Swift, by Ripple or by Chainlink?
- Search the release for the token. Look for “XRP” or “LINK”, not just “XRP Ledger” or “Chainlink.”
- Ask what job the technology does. Moving value, delivering data or passing messages are different jobs.
- Separate a test from a launch. An experiment or pilot is not a live product.
- Ignore “replacement” framing unless both projects were bidding for the same role.
What to watch next
Watch for whether banks connected to Swift’s ledger use Chainlink’s CRE in live payments, and whether Swift ever names the LINK token. On the XRP side, Ripple’s own announcements show whether new customers settle in XRP or in stablecoins. Neither of these tells you where either price goes. They show how each project is actually being used.

Frequently asked questions
Is XRP being replaced by Chainlink?
No. XRP and Chainlink do different jobs. XRP is a ledger's native asset used to settle and bridge payments, while Chainlink is an oracle and interoperability network that carries data and messages between systems.
Do XRP and Chainlink compete?
Mostly not. They overlap only loosely, in that both appear in conversations about banks and tokenized assets. Ripple chose Chainlink price feeds for its RLUSD stablecoin in January 2025, which shows the two working together.
What is the difference between XRP and LINK?
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, with 100 billion created at launch. LINK is a token on Ethereum with a total supply of 1 billion, used to pay Chainlink node operators and for staking.
Does Swift use Chainlink instead of XRP?
Swift has run experiments with Chainlink, and Chainlink said in September 2026 that it is working to connect banks to Swift's ledger through its Runtime Environment. Swift's own ledger announcements do not name the LINK token, and none of this changes how the XRP Ledger works.
What is a blockchain oracle?
An oracle is a service that brings outside information, such as a price, onto a blockchain. Blockchains cannot read the outside world on their own, so smart contracts need an oracle to act on real-world data.
