XRP vs XLM in 2026: Ripple's Bank vs Stellar's Wall Street Deals
XRP and XLM share a co-creator but made opposite bets. How Ripple and Stellar compare in 2026, and why the video says neither coin has gained from the deals.

Key takeaways
- According to the video, Ripple is the stronger business, with revenue, a federal trust bank approval and RLUSD, while Stellar signed more big-name deals in 2026. Neither fact on its own says which coin rises.
- The video puts XRP at about 13 times the size of XLM, roughly $79 billion against about $6 billion, and says one headline tends to move XLM far harder in both directions.
- The video says XRP and XLM closed in the same direction on 82% of days over the past year, so holding both is one bet on payments, not two.
- The video suggests deciding how big your payments slice is before deciding how to split it between XRP and XLM.
- The video names three things to watch: the DTCC going live on Stellar in the first half of 2027, how much RLUSD sits on the XRP Ledger, and whether a spot XLM ETF is approved.
XRP and XLM share a co-creator and do the same job: move money across borders in seconds for less than a penny. In 2026, Ripple and Stellar both won major customers, yet both coins are down for the year, according to a Bullrunners video. The video concludes that the companies’ wins have not flowed through to either coin’s price.
That matters for anyone holding one or both. The video says XRP is down around 30% in 2026 and XLM around 15%, even as money moving on both networks grew sharply. Knowing which bet you made, and how closely the two coins move together, is more useful than picking a side in a fan war.
How are XRP and XLM related?
XRP and XLM share a co-creator, Jed McCaleb. He helped build the XRP Ledger and co-founded the company that became Ripple. He then fell out with the other founders in 2013, and in 2014 he launched Stellar on a copy of Ripple’s code. Bullrunners has covered the real story of Jed McCaleb’s XRP sales separately.
Since XRP’s first big run in 2017, XLM has often been called XRP’s cheap little brother, a coin that only moves when XRP does. The video argues that 2026 is the first year Stellar started winning customers Ripple wanted.
Ripple and Stellar made opposite bets
Ripple is a company trying to own as much of the money “piping” as it can. It builds software, sells it to banks and payment firms, and buys businesses those firms already use. In 2025, Ripple spent around $2.5 billion buying a prime broker (the firm big traders borrow and trade through), a treasury software company and a stablecoin payments firm. On October 26, 2026, it got final approval to become a federally chartered trust bank. Once the bank opens, the reserves behind its RLUSD stablecoin will sit under the same regulator that oversees America’s national banks. Bullrunners covered that approval in what Ripple’s final trust bank approval means for XRP.
Stellar is run by a nonprofit foundation with nothing to sell. Its plan is an open network anyone can use, where big names in finance issue their own dollars. The video lists three examples:
- May 2026: the DTCC, the company that holds most of America’s stocks, picked Stellar to put stocks on a blockchain.
- June 2026: MoneyGram, once one of Ripple’s best-known partners, launched its own dollar on Stellar.
- September 2026: U.S. Bank, America’s fifth-biggest bank, tested its own dollar on Stellar by sending it across the Atlantic.
In the video’s words, Ripple wins customers by owning as much of the system as it can, while Stellar wins them by staying out of the way.
Why haven’t the wins lifted XRP or XLM?
According to the video, the coins play a small role in these deals. It compares XRP and XLM to the stamp on an envelope, while the dollars, stocks and funds are the money inside. A stamp costs next to nothing, so a network can carry four times more value and the coin barely feels it.
The video’s numbers show the gap. It says Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin grew more than 80% in 2026, and tokenized assets on Stellar went from around $900 million in January to close to $4 billion by the end of August. Yet both coins sat below where they started the year.
The video says both coins move on headlines, and on whether anyone actually needs to hold them, far more than on how busy the network is. It points to May as an example. According to the video, XLM rose more than 70% in three days on the DTCC headline, topped just under 30 cents, then gave most of it back once the news got old. The video also says XRP drifted lower in the week after Ripple’s bank approval.
Bloomberg raised the same issue with Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse at Ripple’s own conference in October. The interviewer said the institutional demand Ripple built for “has arrived, but it’s arrived for RLUSD” rather than XRP. Bullrunners has looked at this split before in RLUSD vs XRP.
The case each holder base makes
XRP holders point to size and access. According to the video:
- At the time of the video, XRP was about a $79 billion coin against about $6 billion for XLM, roughly 13 times bigger.
- XRP trades in US spot ETFs, which must buy real XRP when money comes in.
- BNY, which the video calls America’s oldest bank, added XRP to the coins it holds for clients during Ripple’s conference.
- Grayscale’s XLM fund is still not an ETF more than a year after applying.
- Garlinghouse said anyone who doesn’t think XRP is “at the heart of everything Ripple does” is missing the big picture, and that RLUSD was launched to complement XRP.
The video flags one number to test that claim. It says close to half of all RLUSD sat on the XRP Ledger in September, but by the end of October the share was around 30%.
XLM holders point to the list of names: Wall Street’s back office through the DTCC, a top-five US bank and MoneyGram’s dollar. In a clip shown in the video, Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon told The Defiant that an open public network “is what an institution like that should build on.”
How the video scores the two
The table below sums up the video’s comparison. The figures are the video’s.
| Question | XRP / Ripple | XLM / Stellar |
|---|---|---|
| Stronger business | Ripple: revenue, bank charter, RLUSD worth about $2.4 billion, cash for acquisitions | Nonprofit; does not get richer when it wins a customer |
| New big-name deals in 2026 | Fewer, per the video | More: the DTCC, U.S. Bank, MoneyGram |
| Coin size | About $79 billion | About $6 billion |
| Price behaviour | Steadier, deeper liquidity | Faster, swings harder both ways |
| Core bet | Ripple’s bank, RLUSD and ETFs pull real demand into XRP | The DTCC, U.S. Bank and MoneyGram make Stellar Wall Street’s settlement network |
The video’s point is that neither the company scorecard nor the deal list tells you which coin goes up. A Stellar customer only helps XLM holders if it makes people need the coin, and the same logic applies to Ripple and XRP.
Is holding both XRP and XLM diversification?
According to the video, holding both covers you on which network wins, but not on whether payment coins as a group do well. The video says XRP and XLM closed in the same direction on 82% of days over the past year. It compares owning both to owning Coke and Pepsi: you are covered in the cola war, but not if people stop buying soda. Bullrunners has looked at this overlap in whether XRP and XLM are the same bet twice.
The video also plays a clip of BNY’s global head of markets on Bloomberg at Ripple’s conference. BNY holds more than $60 trillion for clients. In the clip, the executive says people are not asking for winners and losers: they “want interoperability. They don’t want to have to choose.” The video reads that as support for holding both, as long as they are treated as one sector.
A sizing framework from the video
The video offers a way to think about the payments slice rather than a pick:
- The slice comes first. The video suggests deciding how much of a portfolio belongs in payment coins before deciding how to split it between XRP and XLM. It argues that if the slice is most of a portfolio, the split barely matters, because a bad year for payment coins hits both.
- Know which bet you made. In the video’s framing, XRP is a bet on Ripple’s bank, RLUSD and ETFs creating real demand for XRP. XLM is a bet on Stellar’s Wall Street traffic lifting the coin.
- Size for the drawdown. The video’s rule for both coins is to hold each at a size where giving back a 70% rally would not seriously damage a portfolio.
- Have a plan before the DTCC date. The video argues that the story often reaches the price long before it reaches real usage. It suggests that holders decide well before the launch what they would do if XLM runs up into it, the way it did on the announcement.
- ETF launch days. The video cautions against chasing ETF opens. It notes that XRP’s first pure spot ETF day in November 2025 brought in about $250 million, and XRP still closed lower.
What to watch next
The video names three events that could decide which side of the payments slice benefits first:
- The DTCC on Stellar. Tokenized stocks and treasuries are planned to go live on Stellar in the first half of 2027.
- Ripple’s trust bank and RLUSD. The video says to watch whether the share of RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, which it puts at about 30% at the end of October, rises or falls. It also says to watch whether stablecoin traffic ever turns into buying of XRP, which the video says has not happened so far.
- A spot XLM ETF. According to the video, approval of Grayscale’s fund would give XLM its first US spot ETF, a buyer that has to hold real XLM.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between XRP and XLM?
XRP runs on the XRP Ledger and is tied to Ripple, a company that sells payment software to banks, issues the RLUSD stablecoin and got final approval for a federally chartered trust bank on October 26, 2026. XLM runs on Stellar, an open network run by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation, where firms like MoneyGram and U.S. Bank issue their own dollars.
Is Stellar a copy of Ripple?
Jed McCaleb helped build the XRP Ledger, left Ripple in 2013 and launched Stellar in 2014 on a copy of Ripple's code. According to the video, the two networks still do the same job but made opposite bets on how to win customers.
Why did XLM jump in May 2026?
On May 27, 2026 the DTCC picked Stellar to put stocks on a blockchain. According to the video, XLM then rose more than 70% in three days, topped just under 30 cents and gave most of the move back.
Should you hold both XRP and XLM for diversification?
The video says XRP and XLM closed in the same direction on 82% of days over the past year, so holding both is one bet on the payments sector rather than two. It suggests treating them as a single slice of a portfolio and choosing that slice's size on purpose.
Is there a spot XLM ETF?
According to the video, Grayscale's XLM fund is still not an ETF more than a year after it applied. The video says an approval would give XLM its first US spot ETF, while XRP already trades in US spot ETFs.

XRP and XLM have the same co-creator and both want a piece of that $28 trillion that moved across borders in 2025, but they go after in opposite ways. So, the real question is which of them should you own or should you hold both? Because on May 27th, the company that holds most of America's stocks pick Stellar to put them on a blockchain in XLM went up more than 70% in just 3 days. Then on May 30th, with XLM still climbing, my research team told our members it was a 2027 story hitting a 2026 price and mentioned how 28 cents was a likely place that a lot of traders were going to take profit. Now, obviously that's not a guarantee, but XLM topped just under 30 cents and they gave almost the whole move back.
And in September, America's fifth biggest bank sent its own dollar across the Atlantic on Stellar. And on October 26th, Ripple went the other way and got final approval to open a federally chartered trust bank. And XRP still drifted lower over the rest of that week. XRP is still about 13 times bigger than XLM. But XRP is down around 30% in 2026 alone, and XLM is down around 15%.
So, the money writing on both networks has completely exploded because Ripple's own stable coin grew more than 80% in 2026 and the tokenized asset on Stellar more than quadrupled while both coins sit lower than where they started back in January. Bloomberg put that exact problem to Ripple CEO at Ripple's own conference in October.
The institutional demand that you've been building for has arrived, but it's arrived for RLUSD. That's Ripple's US dollar stable coin and not XRP. How central is XRP to Ripple anymore? Because Ripple is expanding into various other business ventures, as Scarlet highlighted earlier, it seems like XRP doesn't seem to be a big focus.
So, which one is the better coin and which company actually wins the race? Well, a bank that holds more than $60 trillion for its clients answer that question on Bloomberg the same week. And it isn't the answer that either holder base wants to hear. So, we're going to get into that in this video. If you're feeling bullish, like this video and hit the subscribe button.

All right, bull runners. Welcome back to the channel. So, to figure out which one to own, XRP or XLM, you have to start with how these two got tied together. Because ever since XRP's first big run back in 2017, XLM has been called its cheap little brother, the coin that only moves when XRP moves and only matters because XRP does. In 2026 is the first year the little brother started winning customers. the big one wanted.
And the reason goes back to 2013 when one of Ripple's founders quit because Jed Maleb helped build the XRP ledger and co-founded the company that became Ripple. Then fell out with the other founders back in 2013 and launched Stellar in 2014, which is a copy of Ripple's code. 12 years later, the two networks still do the same job, moving money around the world in a few seconds for less than a penny. But the people running them made opposite bets on how to win. You see, Ripple is a company and its plan is to own as much of the money piping as it can get.
So, it basically builds the software, sells it to banks and payment firms and buys the businesses those companies already use. And in 2025 alone, Ripple spent around $2.5 billion, buying a prime broker, which is the firm big traders borrow and trade through, plus a treasury software company and a stable coin payments firm. And on October 26th, it got final approval to become a federal trust bank. So once it opens, the reserves behind its own stable coin sit under the same regulator that oversees America's national banks. Stellar is run by a nonprofit foundation with nothing to sell.
So its plan is the opposite, an open network that anyone can use where the biggest names in money issue their own dollars. And that's why MoneyGram, which used to be one of Ripple's best known partners, launched its own dollar on Stellar in June. and why US Bank tested its own dollar on Stellar in September and why the DTCC picked Stellar for stocks back in May. So, Ripple wins customers by owning as much of the system as it can while Stellar wins them by staying out of the way. And both of them won big in 2026. For your portfolio though, the coin does one small job in all of this because XRP and XLM are the stamp on the envelope and the dollars.
The stocks and the funds are the money inside of it. Now, a stamp costs next to nothing. So, a network can carry four times more money and the coin barely feels it. Which is why both coins move on headlines and on whether anyone needs to hold them far more than how busy the network actually gets. And that's exactly what happened back in May.
You see, when XLM nearly doubled on one headline and drifted back down once the headline [music] got old. So, the real question for anyone holding either coin is which side has given people a reason to own the coin itself. And each holder base has a strong answer there. The XRP community's answer starts with size. Because XRP is a $79 billion coin against about a $6 billion coin for XLM, and it trades in spot ETFs in the US, they have to buy real XRP every time money comes in.
The oldest bank in America also added XRP to the coins that it holds for its clients during Ripple's conference, while Grayscale's XLM fund still isn't an ETF more than a year after it applied to become one. Then Ripple CEO says XRP still sits at the center of their business model. It's basically their north star.
Anyone who doesn't think that XRP is at the heart of everything Ripple does is kind of missing the big picture from my point of view. You know, when we launched RLUSD, it was to complement what we're doing with XRP.
In September, close to half of all RLUSD sat on the XRP ledger, but by the end of October, it was around 30%. So that's the number to watch if you want to know whether he's right or not. The XLM community's answer is the list of names. Because back in 2026, Stellar won Wall Street's back office, a top five American bank, and [music] Moneygram's own dollar. The tokenized assets on Stellar went from around $900 million in January to close to $4 billion by the end of August.
And Stellar CEO told the Defiant why the DTCC chose the network. I'm just so excited about them first of all choosing Stellar because it made a whole lot of sense just in terms of an open public network is what an institution like that should build on.
Both communities are right about their own side. And the part that both of them skip is the price because XRP got a bank and drifted lower. XLM got Wall Street and handed the pump back. So if you held only XRP in late May, you watched the coin that everyone calls the little brother nearly double in 3 days. Well, you're sat still.
And if you bought XLM on day three, you spent the summer watching it give most of that back. Now, we did warn our community. I even talked about that on a live call about how I expected XLM to sell off even further to the downside, too. That's exactly what happened. Now, we don't get every single prediction right, but when you understand market structure, when you understand volume, when you understand confluence, when you understand divergences, you just know what to look for.
And that's what we educate people on on our weekly calls. Check that out through the link below, guys, after this video. Jump on the next one. and I'd love to have you there. So, instead of picking a side here, let's just score both coins on the same question. Which company is winning?
Which one's the better coin? And whether you should own one or if you should own both or none at all. So, which company is winning comes first. And as a business, it's definitely Ripple because they have revenue. They have a bank charter.
They have a stable coin worth about $2.4 billion with about 30% of it on the XRP ledger. And the cash to buy whatever is still missing. Stellar signs these open network deals faster in 2026, but a nonprofit doesn't get richer when it wins a customer, and neither does anyone holding XLM, unless that customer makes people need the coin. So, if you want the company that's further ahead, well, that's definitely Ripple. If you want the network that signed more new Wall Street names in 2026, that's Stellar.
And neither answer tells you which coin goes up from these deals. So, a lot of people make a decision based on what the company is doing, which doesn't necessarily directly affect the coin because how it affects the coin and how people use the coin is where you're really going to win. Which one is the better coin really depends on what you want it to do in your portfolio. XRP is the biggest deeper liquidity coin that Wall Street can already buy through spot ETFs, so it's the one that can carry a big share of a portfolio without one headline swinging it 70%. XLM is 13 times smaller.
So, the same headline can move it far harder in both directions. So, you get the upside, but you also get the risk of the downside, which can be great, you know, if you're positioned before the news. It can also be painful if you're buying the top of that news and watching it ride all the way back down. [music] So, XRP is the steadier of the two. XLM is the faster one on the price chart. And the rule for both is the same.
Hold it at a size where giving back a 70% rally won't absolutely destroy your portfolio. Which one to invest in is the question that I can't answer directly for you because nobody knows which chart wins for a higher percentage in 2027 moving forward. XRP is the bet that Ripple's bank, their stable coin, the ETFs pull real demand into XRP itself long term. XLM is the bet that the DTCC, the US Bank, and MoneyGram make Stellar the network that Wall Street settles on and that all that traffic lifts the coin. So, if you hold one, know which of those two bets you actually made and size it so you can sleep through that weight and the volatility in between, which leaves holding both because BNY Melon's global head of markets talked about exactly that on Bloomberg at Ripple's own conference from inside a bank that holds more than $60 trillion for its clients.
So, we're not seeing people asking us for winners and losers. People want interoperability. They don't want to have to choose.
The bank that holds more of the world's money than almost anyone wants every road open, so it can move between them. So, holding both coins is actually a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But XRP and XLM closed in the same direction on 82% of days over the past year. So, owning both is like owning Coke and Pepsi, you know, which covers you on who wins the cola war. and it does nothing for you if people stop buying soda. It's like investing in Microsoft and Apple.
Well, both companies did well. It's like Nike and Adidas. You're basically investing in the same bet if the whole sector does well. So, treat them as just one slice of your portfolio, one sector, one narrative, the payment slice, and decide how big that slice is before you decide to split it. Because if you put 100% of your net worth and you just split it 50/50, that's really just one concentrated bet into the payments narrative.
So, if that slice is the bulk of your portfolio, the split between XRP and XLM barely matters because a bad year for payment coins hits both. And if it's a smaller slice, well, you can hold both and you can still sleep through a bad year because you're diversified into other sectors of crypto. And three things decide which side of that slice gets paid first. The first is the DTCC, which plans to have tokenized stocks and treasuries live on Stellar in the first half of 2027. if XLM runs into that launch the way that it ran on the announcement. May already showed you how it ends.
So decide where you'd take profit well before the date arrives. So understand divergences, especially regular bearish divergences. Understand how to look at the stochcastic RSI on the weekly [music] chart to know when you're experiencing overbought conditions, bearish crosses, you name it. Understand the moving averages, too. All of that we talk about through the link below.
The second is Ripple's bank opening its doors and RLUSD growing on the XRP ledger. And the thing to watch is whether that stable coin traffic ever turns into buying into XRP because so far it hasn't. So judge the bank by what it does for XRP demand over the next year, not what it says it's going to do. The third is a spot XLM ETF because if Gayscale Fund ever gets approved, XLM gets its first US spot ETF, a buyer that has to actually hold real XLM. So, just remember that XRP's first peer spot ETF day in November of 2025 brought in about $250 million and XRP closed lower that day.
So, an approval is a reason to hold what you [music] already have and chasing the open is burned XP holders once already. So, if you hold either coin, just size the payment side of your portfolio on purpose. And when the headline, like what happened in May, hands you a 70% move. You can take some of it off the table if you want because the story usually arrives in the price years before it arrives in the actual usage and the development happening. So, people buy the rumors and then they just sell the news.
So, everything outside that slice belongs in coins doing different jobs for your portfolios because when money rotates out of a payment coin, it goes somewhere else. And if you want to be there before everybody else is, that's the whole reason my research team works the way that they do. Because on May 30th, while XLM was still climbing, they told our members the DTCC deal was a 2027 story wearing a 2026 price tag. And we talked about XLM dropping from there. So, if you bought XLM near 28 cents in May because every video said the DTCC changes everything. it's confirmed or you hold both coins and you thought you made a diversified decision.
You already know how it feels to read the news correctly and still lose money [music] on the trade. You were never given a plan for when to buy a story and when to sell it based on the news. So, inside our private intelligence network, we run live weekly calls every single week.
