DTCC Tokenization on Canton: Why the XRP Ledger Isn't on the List

The DTCC picked Canton for tokenized Treasuries and Ripple Custody plugged in, yet XRP stalled near $1.40. What happened, and the three checks for holders.

Video: DTCC Tokenization on Canton: Why the XRP Ledger Isn't on the List

Key takeaways

  • The DTCC picked Canton, built by Digital Asset, to tokenize US Treasuries. It also named its own network built on Hyperledger Besu.
  • Ripple Custody version 1.43 lets institutions hold Canton coin and Canton tokens. Nothing in the announcement requires anyone to buy, hold or use XRP.
  • Asked which blockchains are gaining use, DTCC's head of digital assets named Solana, Quant, Stellar and Ethereum, not the XRP Ledger.
  • Per the video, XRP's early-October slide came from liquidations, macro headwinds and supply, not from the DTCC news.
  • Before reacting to a tokenization headline, check for a DTCC press release, whether it touches XRP or the XRP Ledger, and what ETF flows, escrow and the Fed are doing.

The DTCC, the back office of the US stock and bond market, is moving parts of its business onto a blockchain called Canton, starting with tokenized US Treasuries. Ripple plugged its custody business into Canton on October 7, 2026. The XRP Ledger was not among the networks the DTCC chose or named, and XRP traded just under $1.40 on October 9.

For XRP holders, this is a familiar pattern: headlines that mention Ripple next to big Wall Street names, and a chart that goes nowhere. The video walks through the dates, the documents and the people building the system, then explains why good news for Ripple the company and a flat XRP price can both be true.

What is the DTCC and why does it matter?

The DTCC (Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation) is the firm that tracks who owns which US shares and makes sure that when one side of a trade pays, the other side gets what it paid for. In an interview published at the end of August 2026, DTCC head of digital assets Nadine Chakar said the DTCC is the custodian for about $150 trillion of US assets and the sole central depository in the US. She said it processes roughly $4 quadrillion of settlements a year.

The DTCC is also a clearer. Chakar described a clearer as the buyer to every seller and the seller to every buyer. When this part of the system changes how it keeps records, the whole market eventually feels it.

Tokenizing means creating a digital token on a blockchain that stands for something that already exists, such as a share or a government bond. The bond itself doesn’t change. The record of who owns it does. For more background, see how the DTCC’s tokenization plans compare with Project Agora.

What has the DTCC actually done on chain?

The DTCC has received regulatory clearance, picked a partner for Treasuries and run limited live trades, but it has not announced a full launch. The video lays out the timeline in order:

  1. December 2025: The DTCC said the SEC had given it a no-action letter for a new tokenization service. In effect, the regulator said it would not object as long as set conditions were met. The DTCC said the service would launch in the second half of 2026.
  2. December 17, 2025: The DTCC named Digital Asset, the company behind Canton, as its partner for US Treasuries. The plan is to turn Treasuries held at the DTCC into tokens on the Canton network.
  3. May 2026: The DTCC pointed to October for the full launch.
  4. July 15, 2026: The DTCC ran its first limited production trades. The Block, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported that nearly 40 firms took part. JPMorgan tokenized part of its holdings in a fund that tracks the Nasdaq, and Microsoft shares were among the first assets. A DTCC digital asset technology executive described assets moving “into the digital world and back again.”
  5. October 7, 2026: The DTCC published answers to common questions about the service.
  6. October 8, 2026: Canton posted that tokenized Treasuries were “coming onto” Canton. In other words, they were not there yet.

Was October 2026 really launch day?

Not according to the evidence the video checked. When the video checked on October 9, 2026, there was no DTCC announcement saying the full commercial service had gone live on Canton.

Chakar herself was careful. In the August interview she said real use means using the technology “day in and day out,” not doing a short repo trade so someone can issue a press release. She said “we’re not there yet” and that October would hopefully be a “springboard,” but that “it’s going to take a bit of time.” That caution came from the person running the project, not from a critic.

Canton is also not the only rail. Chakar said the DTCC’s announcement named two networks: Canton and the DTCC’s own network, built on software called Hyperledger Besu. The video’s advice: if a thumbnail says it’s all done, look for the DTCC’s own press release.

What did Ripple announce with Canton?

Canton Network posted on October 7, 2026 that Ripple Custody is integrated with Canton. Canton said version 1.43 of Ripple Custody lets institutions hold and move Canton coin (CC), Canton’s own coin, and Canton tokens on the same platform as their other digital assets. That means the same rules and the same audit trail, without a separate custodian. CIP-56 is Canton’s standard format for tokenized assets on the network, such as tokenized funds and bonds. The video’s explainer on the Canton Network and its CC coin covers the coin in more detail.

Custody here means safeguarding the private keys that control on-chain assets. Ripple Custody is the vault and key manager big institutions use. It is not a payment network and it is not the XRP Ledger. Ripple built much of it by buying Swiss custody firm Metaco in 2023.

According to reports on the same release, version 1.43 also added support for Circle’s USDC on its Arc network and for the Sui blockchain. The video describes this as Ripple selling “picks and shovels” to whichever chain wins. It is a sensible business move for Ripple.

What’s missing matters, though. Nothing in the announcement says a single XRP has to be bought, held or used. Ripple can earn fees while Canton tokens stay on Canton.

Which blockchains did the DTCC mention?

When Chakar was asked which blockchains the DTCC is watching, she named Solana, Quant, Stellar and Ethereum as places where use cases are starting to come together. The XRP Ledger was not on the list.

To be fair, she also said the DTCC is not picking winners or losers. It is following its clients and following where liquidity goes. The video reads this as neither a door slamming shut nor an invitation.

The “into the digital world and back again” phrase also matters. These tokens stand for ordinary shares and bonds and can be turned back into the ordinary version. The back office going on chain means stocks and Treasuries become tokens. It does not mean anyone needs a separate coin between them.

Why did XRP stall near $1.40?

The video gives three reasons for XRP’s slide in early October 2026, and none of them involve the DTCC.

Reason What the video says
Forced selling On October 8 and 9, 2026, more than $1 billion of leveraged bets were wiped out across crypto, according to market reports. Forced sellers sell whatever they hold, whatever the news.
Macro headwinds On Bloomberg on October 6, analyst Noelle Acheson pointed to higher yields, rising rate-hike expectations, higher oil prices and a stronger dollar as pressure on Bitcoin. She added that most investors were looking through those headwinds. XRP tends to move with Bitcoin when big money gets nervous.
Supply Under Ripple’s 2017 escrow system, up to 1 billion XRP can unlock each month, and Ripple usually relocks most of it. With around 60 billion XRP circulating, according to market data sites, it takes a lot of real buying to move the price.

The video also cites a CoinDesk report that on October 8, XRP ETFs were the only crypto ETFs with money coming in, about $8 million, while Bitcoin funds lost $240 million. That did not stop the price slipping. Inflows of $8 million are small next to a coin worth roughly $80 billion in total.

The Fed’s interest rate decision on October 28, 2026 is the kind of date the video says can matter more to price than anything happening in the back office.

Does good news for Ripple help XRP?

A stronger Ripple is better for XRP than a weaker one, but the video argues that a company and a coin are not the same thing. Custody clients pay Ripple for a service, and that is revenue for the business. XRP only gets a lift when someone actually needs the coin: to send a payment, or to use it on the XRP Ledger. This gap is covered in more depth in why a Ripple win isn’t automatically an XRP win.

That is why the video highlights a smaller story. CoinDesk reported on October 9 that the XRP Ledger had switched on permission delegation. This feature lets a business assign specific jobs to separate accounts without giving away its master keys. Custodians and banks ask for exactly this kind of control. The feature won’t move the price on its own, but it makes it easier for institutions to work on the XRP Ledger itself. Bullrunners has explained how XRP Ledger permission delegation works.

Three questions to ask when a headline lands

The video offers a simple filter for any “Wall Street goes on chain” story:

  1. Has the DTCC said it itself? Not Canton, and not a fan account. Look for an actual DTCC press release that uses the word “launch” and gives real volumes.
  2. Does it touch XRP or the XRP Ledger at all? Ripple Custody holding Canton tokens does not. A bank settling on the XRP Ledger, or a DTCC token issued there, would.
  3. What’s the money doing? ETF flows, the monthly escrow release and the Fed’s October 28 decision are what move the price in the short run.

What to watch next

The video’s view is that the plumbing of the US financial system is being rebuilt slowly and carefully, and Ripple wants to be one of the vaults sitting next to those pipes. That is real progress for Ripple. But as the video puts it, a pipe doesn’t pay you for owning a different pipe.

Over the coming weeks, watch for:

  • a DTCC press release confirming a full commercial launch on Canton, with volumes;
  • any sign that institutions are using XRP itself, or issuing assets on the XRP Ledger;
  • the Fed’s rate decision on October 28, 2026; and
  • daily XRP ETF flows alongside the monthly escrow release.

Until someone actually needs the coin, good news for Ripple and a flat XRP chart can happen at the same time. The two do not contradict each other.

Frequently asked questions

Did the DTCC choose the XRP Ledger for tokenization?

No. The DTCC named Canton, built by Digital Asset, as its partner for tokenized US Treasuries, alongside its own network built on Hyperledger Besu. When DTCC's head of digital assets listed chains where use cases are forming, she named Solana, Quant, Stellar and Ethereum.

Is the DTCC's Canton tokenization service fully live?

Not as of October 9, 2026, according to the video. The DTCC ran its first limited production trades on July 15, 2026 and published an FAQ on October 7. The video found no DTCC press release saying the full commercial service had launched.

What did Ripple announce with Canton?

On October 7, 2026, Canton Network said Ripple Custody was integrated with Canton. Version 1.43 lets institutions hold and move Canton coin and Canton tokens on the same platform as their other digital assets.

Does Ripple Custody supporting Canton help XRP's price?

Not directly, according to the video. Custody clients pay Ripple for a service, which is revenue for the company, but the announcement does not require any XRP to be bought, held or used.

Why did XRP fall in early October 2026 despite good news?

The video gives three reasons: more than $1 billion of leveraged bets were liquidated across crypto on October 8 and 9, higher yields and a stronger dollar weighed on risk assets, and XRP's large supply means it takes a lot of real buying to move the price.
